1. Ray Rice Domestic Violence Scandal
Ray Rice Domestic Violence charges will remain one of the most unexpected NFL scandals. Rice played for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. He was a part of the team in the 2013-14 season. Ray Rice was in a relationship with Janay Palmer and he went to a casino in New Jersey. Both had an argument and it resulted in a clash. Ray Rice punched and assaulted her, and Palmer spit on his face. In the elevator, Janay Palmer collapsed and lost consciousness. The video of the incident was shared by the TMZ and Rice was suspended. Ray Rice didn’t play NFL after the incident and he married Janay Palmer in the same year.
2. Ben Roethlisberger’e Sexual Assault
Ben Roethlisberger is an icon in the National Football League. He had a great career with a couple of Super Bowl and Pro Bowl titles. Ben Roethlisberger’s personal life incidents brought him shame. In 2006, Ben Roethlisberger traveled to the Stateline, Nevada, for a celebrity golf tournament. Ben Roethlisberger met a staff member of the resort he stayed at and had a sexual encounter with the woman, Andrea McNully. Andrea McNully alleged Ben Roethlisberger raped her inside Lake Tahoe, a resort in Nevada. The case lasted for months and it finally ended in 2011. Ben Roethlisberger’s attorney defended him stating it was a masterplan by Andrea McNully and the management. Roethlisberger didn’t receive a ban and he continued to play the league till 2021.
3. Henry Ruggs III Car Crashing Incident
Henry Ruggs, a former player of the Las Vegas Raiders was involved in a vehicular manslaughter case in 2021. Ruggs was traveling near Spring valley with his girlfriend in Chevrolet Corvette at 220 km/h. Reports revealed both were drunk and it resulted in a crash. Henry Ruggs’ car hit Tina Tinor, a young girl and her dog. Both were burned and they eventually lost their lives. Ruggs was charged with reckless driving and arrested under the DUI case. He was sentenced to 3-10 years in prison.
4. George Atkinson’s Feud with Lynn Swann
George Atkinson is a retired NFL legend. Atkinson was one of the best players for the Oakland Raiders. He was involved in two on-field brawls against Lynn Swann of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1975, Atkinson’s Raiders played against the Steelers in the AFC Championship. Atkinson intentionally hit Swann which resulted in Swann’s exclusion. After a year, Raiders and Steelers played the NFL opener in 1976. George Atkinson again smashed Lynn Swann and he targeted the backside of his head. Swann fell down, but George Atkinson stated he was playing within the rules. Chuck Noll, the Steelers’ coach expressed his anger and said there was a criminal element. George Atkinson hitting Lynn Swann not once, but twice, remains one of the shocking scandals in the NFL.
5. Kareem Hunt’s Assault Case
Kareem Hunt plays as a running back for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. Hunt was signed by the Chiefs in 2017, but he was released for being involved in a scandal. In 2018, Kareem Hunt was caught in a physical assault. In February 2018, Hunt was staying at a hotel with his friends. A video shared by the TMZ Sportz featured Hunt and his friends. Kareem Hunt was seen bashing and kicking a woman who called him a racist. After the video was leaked, Hunt was not allowed for practice sessions and he was eventually removed by the Chiefs. Hunt signed with the Cleveland Browns for the 2019 NFL season before making a dramatic return again to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024.

In the NFL, the Bountygate scandal remains a historic incident. The Bountygate operation started in 2009, but it was only leaked in 2012. It involved players of New Orleans Saints and their staff. Greg Williams and Sean Payton paid a bounty to Saints’ players to injure players of Minnesota Vikings in the 2009 NFC championship clash. In 2010, an anonymous player leaked the Bountygate operation and all plans to the management. It was revealed Saints’ main targets were Favre and Warner of Vikings. 7. Deshaun Watson’s Sexual Encounter with 24 Women
Deshaun Watson is a three-time Pro Bowl winner in the NFL. Watson plays for the Cleveland Browns and he was a part of the Houston Texans for 4 years. A shocking revelation about Deshaun Watson’s sexual allegations started to come out in 2021. On March 16, 2021, Watson’s first lawsuit was filed and it revealed Watson behaved inappropriately with a massage therapist. When everyone thought it was one, the attorney revealed more allegations the following day. It was revealed Deshaun Watson had a sexual encounter with 24 women and what’s shocking is everyone was a massage therapist. After sexual allegations against Deshaun Watson, his endorsement deals were cancelled and he was suspended by the NFL for 11 games in 2022 with a fine of $5 million.
8. The Deflategate Scandal
Almost every NFL fan knows the Deflategate scandal featuring the New England Patriots. Tom Brady who played as a Quarterback for the Patriots planned to deflate balls for their AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The game took place on January 18, 2015, and players of Colts found it even before the game. During the play, D’Qwell Jackson had doubts over the balls that were used for the game and he gave it to the officials for an inspection. Patriots’ game balls were inflated again during the second half and they eventually won the game. Tom Brady was suspended for 4 games in the NFL 2016 season, but there was no clear evidence against him.
9. Brett Favre Scandals
Brett Favre was a part of multiple scandals. The Green Pay Packers’ quarterback was addicted to alcohol and vicodin during his peak career days in 1995/96. The NFL management banned him from taking drugs and alcohol, and Favre was sent to a rehab center who almost lost his life to seizures. In 2010, Brett Favre was infamous again for a sexting scandal. Favre was signed by the New York Jets for the 2008 NFL season and reports claimed he had a sex chat with one of the Jets’ hosts, Jenn Sterger. Jenn Sterger revealed she was threatened by Favre to come to his hotel. Favre accepted that he sent voicemails, but he denied allegations of sending nude pictures to Sterger.

Before his NFL debut, Hill was in a relationship with Crystal Espinal in 2014 and both had a fight that led to a physical assault. Tyreek Hill assaulted her and punched her in the face. The incident took place before his NFL debut and his girlfriend was pregnant during that time. Tyreek Hill separated from Crystal Espinal and has had a great NFL career since 2016. In 2019, Hill was a part of another Battery incident where reports claimed he broke his 3-year old son’s arm.
