The Edsel Ranger was a rare vehicle. Here is everything about it.
In 1958, Edsel Ranger was launched. Edsel was a temporary automobile brand of Ford who launched this model to retain its buyers. Edsel Ranger was mainly designed to dominate Ford’s rivals like Buick, Chrysler, and Chevrolet. The Edsel Ranger was known for its iconic vertical grille, hardtops, and push button. Let us see more about the Edsel Ranger and its features.
Equipped With Ford Engines

The Edsel Ranger was built using iconic Ford V8 engines. These models were made of Y-block V8, FE V8, and V8 engines. Some units incorporated Mercury V8 engines. The Edsel Ranger was equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor, 3-speed manual transmission, and 3-speed automatic “Teletouch” transmission. The Teletouch system and push button system were new additions. Buttons were equipped in the steering’s centre part. The ride was made better with soft suspension and leaf springs. The top speed for Edsel Ranger was 100mph to 120mph based on engines.
Features
The Edsel Ranger was designed as a comfortable vehicle. Some of the features were wide bench seats, futuristic dashboard, big cargo space, and chromium trim. Most of the body parts were made of chrome. The other features like soft suspension, drum brakes, and displacement engines made way for a smooth ride.
Design
The center of attraction was the vertical grille which looked like a jet. It was an iconic design and impressed everyone. It was called the “Horsepower Collar” grille. With wide stance, long hood, and tailfins, the designs were impressed by the popular 50s vehicles. Some models featured reverse slant near the rear window. The rear end featured taillights. Headlights and Grille were made of chromium.
Smooth Driving Experience
Although the Edsel Ranger was a luxury vehicle, it was designed as a comfortable vehicle. Ford designed this as a comfort vehicle with bench seats, soft suspension tuning, smooth engines, and big interior space. The Edsel Ranger was not a durable vehicle, but people could experience smooth rides during trips. The V8 engines made sure it was both comfortable and affordable for long drives.
It Was a Classic Vehicle
Although the Edsel Ranger models were a failure, it remains an iconic vehicle. The Edsel Ranger was in production for just 3 years between 1958 to 1960. The demand grew in 1959 and it influenced the next generation cars. It had a great legacy and influence in popular culture. Not more than 1.2L units of Edsel Ranger were sold, but it continues to remain a classic collector model.
High Price
The Edsel Ranger was not a commercially successful vehicle. The major reason was its pricing. When it was launched, the price was $3,000 USD. In the following years, Edsel Ranger was sold for $2,600 USD on average. Edsel Ranger was a comfort vehicle with great designs, but the performance was not as great as a muscle car. Many felt it was expensive as one could buy any muscle car for the same price.
