Here is everything about the 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler ii.
In 1969, Mercury launched a special vehicle named the Cyclone Spoiler ii. This was designed for NASCAR Aero Wars and was only in production for a single year. Mercury Cyclone Spoiler ii was launched to compete against their nemesis like Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, and Plymouth. It was a unique 2-door fastback vehicle. The model gained fame, but it stopped production because of Nascar rules and production cost. There was another model which was set for a launch in 1970. Here is everything about the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler ii 1970 model.
Multiple Engine Options

The Mercury Cyclone Spoiler ii was built around different engines. As this model was launched as a street legal and racing vehicle, separate engines were used. The designed engines were 429 Cobra Jet, 429 Super Cobra Jet, and Boss 429. Cyclone Spoiler ii was an RWD with 4-speed manual transmission and C6 automatic gearbox. The C6 gearbox included a heavy-duty Ford automatic transmission. It was a front-engine RWD with a heavy-duty 9-inch Ford rear axle. The vehicle was designed as a top speed model with an overall speed of 140mph.
Features & Technology
The 70 Cyclone Spoiler ii was equipped with advanced features. It was a fastback vehicle with bucket seats, rear spoilers, tachometer, oil cooler, dual exhaust, and racing mirrors. The vehicle’s technology included heavy-duty cooling systems, ram air induction system, rocker panels, rochester carburetor, and aerodynamic nose cones.
Aggressive Styling
Just like its predecessor, the 70 Cyclone Spoiler ii had aggressive aerodynamics in design. The exterior had a flush mounted grille, fastback roofline, extended nose cone, and hidden headlights. It had quad headlights, long hood, front spoiler, and short deck. The racing stripes and decals were retained. In the rear end, the dual exhaust outlets and Chrome bumpers were equipped. It was available with multiple color schemes: blue, calypso coral, and orange. Like the 1969 model, this Cyclone Spoiler ii retained the same designs with some extra upgrades.
Stopped Because of NASCAR Rules
The 1970 Cyclone Spoiler ii was stopped because of many reasons. It was launched as a racing vehicle for NASCAR Aero Wars and Mercury was successful in their mission. After 1969, NASCAR imposed new rules for safety reasons as these vehicles were driven at high speed. The production cost was another reason for the stoppage of Cyclone Spoiler ii in 1970. Ford was another reason for the downfall as they moved towards Torino vehicles.
Low Units
When the Cyclone Spoiler ii was unveiled in 1969, only 503 units were sold. Though it was a racing vehicle, NASCAR limited the production for multiple reasons. The low production unit was another reason for the vehicle’s stoppage. People liked the original Cyclone Spoiler ii model, but it was not continued for multiple reasons. If Cyclone Spoiler ii continued again in 1970, the total units would not have crossed the 500 mark.
