eSports are becoming increasingly popular all over the world, providing talented gamers with the opportunity to create a healthy income stream from competing in eSports tournaments and events. Today, eSports events are staged around the world, often with sizeable prize pools. This article examines three of the most exciting eSports events yet to come in 2021.
The International DOTA 2 Championships
Planned for the 1st to the 31st of August 2021, this international event was set to make history as the largest annual eSports event. Hosted by DOTA 2’s developer Valve, the tournament consists of 18 teams battling for their share of a predicted $40 million prize pool, which was raised through crowdfunding.
In June 2021, the event organisers were dealt a devastating blow, casting doubt on whether the event could be staged in Stockholm. With eSports lacking Swedish Sports Federation recognition, unless ongoing Covid-19 related international travel restrictions are eased, anyone attempting to travel to Sweden for the event – including staff, talent and players – would be denied a visa.
The tournament organisers are currently in emergency talks with the Swedish government. However, after postponing the event last year, they remain committed to staging the International DOTA 2 Championship in 2021.
In the event that their talks with the Swedish government fail to be productive, the organisers are exploring alternative venues outside of Sweden, striving to find a solution that will enable the event to be held elsewhere in Europe this year.
Updated information can be obtained via the DOTA 2 website.
League of Legends World Championship 2021
The 2021 League of Legends World Championship will open on the 6th November 2021 at the Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen is the country’s fifth largest city, a leading financial centre and bustling hub of technological innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.
With a capacity of more than 60,000 people, the stadium is home to Chinese Super League team Shenzhen F.C.
Riot Games’ Global Head of eSports John Needham said that the company was extremely excited to push the boundaries of sport and entertainment this year, explaining that it chose Shenzhen as a venue since it is China’s most competitive and innovative city, making it the perfect landscape to host the Finals.

Provided that safety conditions allow, the tournament will be staged at Ericcson Globe Arena, with the organiser allowing fans to watch matches right at the arena, as well as broadcasting fights in 4K resolution for the first time.
