Things are going well for Daniel Levy at Tottenham’s helm, with the club completing new deals for manager Mauricio Pochettino and star striker Harry Kane. Pochettino signed a new five-year contract which will keep him at the club till 2023.
Meanwhile, Kane, who scored 30 goals in the league last season, signed a new six-year contract that will keep him at the club till 2024. Things seem to be going well for the Lilywhites.
Pochettino is yet to win a title with the club, but he has brought considerable changes to the squad. Making a number of successful signings, the former Southampton manager has certainly transformed this team from mid-table finishers to regular title contenders. Spurs just need to maintain their consistency and form, and the title could be all theirs.
In order to do so, the club need to have to make some new signings. Gone are the days when the youth products were brought in to win the trophies.
In today’s football era, if you want to win, you must spend. Sure, there are always exceptions like Leicester’s fairytale title triumph, but how often do you see something like that?
Spurs have not made any new signings yet, besides offering new contracts to their stars. But it goes without saying that Tottenham must bolster their forces in the middle of the park.
And with that in mind, Tottenham should target a move for Borussia Dortmund sensation, Julian Weigl. The 22-year-old joined Dortmund from 1860 Munich in the summer of 2015 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the Bundesliga’s best holding midfielders. He has made a total of 127 appearances for the club so far.
The midfielder is exceptional with the ball at his feet. He’s defensively sound, having averaged 2.8 tackles and 1.4 interceptions in the league last season. He also managed an impressive average of 5.5 tackles per game in the Europa League. Those are the numbers of a central defender but his pace and abilities allow him to perform at this level.
At the age of 22, Weigl has shown massive growth and maturity in his game. He could be the one to take Mousa Dembele’s spot in the team and become the new engine in their midfield. Hence, Levy should aim to bring him in at all costs because there doesn’t seem to be a better option out there right now.
