Swansea City endured a dismal campaign as they crashed out of the Premier League, ending a 7-year stay. The Swans needed a mammoth goal difference on the final day to pull off a great escape, but they ultimately failed to do so and finished in the 18th spot in the Premier League.
Now, they will have to ply their trade in the Championship. Following relegation, Swansea are expected to undergo some major changes this summer. A number of key players are expected to leave the club, with Ki Sung-yeung having left already.
Newly-appointed manager Graham Potter will now have to turn a broken team into Premier League material once again. The Swans often lacked the cutting edge in front of the goal, with no creativity or threat in the final third. They scored a measly 28 goals in the English top-flight last season, which was also the lowest in the division.
Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham started brightly but the young striker’s campaign was blighted with injury problems, keeping him out of the side for most of the season. Meanwhile, the Ayew brothers’ partnership was not enough for Swansea to escape the drop.
It must be noted that Swansea have are yet to find a replacement for the sensational Gylfi Sigurdsson, who left the Welsh club for Everton. The Icelandic midfielder was the Swans’ go-to guy in any situation, and his absence has certainly affected them. With that in mind, here are two signings Graham Potter could make to turn things around for Swansea.
Jordi Jair was born in Ecuador and signed for Real Madrid’s youth team in 2011. The diminutive defender has graduated from the prestigious academy and Swansea could use him as a back-up for their first-choice left-back Martin Olsson.
The Swans were leaky at the back throughout the previous term and some added depth should benefit them. Jordi is a full-back who possesses all qualities required for a player in his position. He’s skilful, speedy and is adept at contributing to the attack as well.
It’s not easy to make it into Real Madrid’s youth setup, and the arrival of the defender could work wonders for Swansea.
This may be an odd idea but with West Brom enduring relegation and showing no signs of improvement, Rondon must look for a transfer elsewhere.
The Venezuelan striker has often been a handful for defenders with his aggressive and bullish style of play. He scored 7 goals and assisted 4 in 32 appearances for a Baggies side that barely had any power in their engine last season.
With Wilfried Bony’s future uncertain, the Swans could use someone of Rondon’s calibre to bring them back to the Premier League. The likes of Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew could use a player like Rondon to provide support as well.
