Tottenham Hotspur made a record of not making a single signing this summer, however, they managed to keep their key players for the upcoming season. They have won both league games thus far, making an ideal start to the campaign. Nonetheless, there will be a point in the season where they would need fringe players to come up and perform a vital role. And that’s where they will fall short.
Spurs are a big team now and they must do well in every competition they take part in. So, having a wide squad to challenge on all fronts should have been their initial priority. In a way, it is completely fine to build a new stadium to generate more income, but that shouldn’t affect the transfer business like it did this summer. With the current squad of players, they are an injury or two away from crumbling.
Here’s why Tottenham will struggle to fight on all fronts this season.
For any club, playing in front of the home crowd in a new stadium is a matter of pride. However, in the case of Tottenham, they haven’t been able to complete the construction so far, forcing Mauricio Pochettino’s men to play their home leg fixtures at Wembley Stadium. The final date of completion hasn’t arrived yet, keeping the club and players in anticipation.
It adds to the confusion in the whole system, and this kind of distraction is not good for the concentration of the players, who must continue focusing on big games week after week.
There is a reason why Spurs often start the season well, exceed everybody’s expectations but fall through at the last hurdle. They have one of the best starting line-ups in Europe, provided everyone is fit. However, their bench strength is incomparable to what is being put on the pitch. Since Pochettino is always an injury or two away from worrying about the depth of the squad, key players have to play extra minutes throughout the season.
Having to play extra games for the team is not a bad thing at all. But with the kind of high-intensity football Tottenham play, one must not expect players to run the added yards and not get fatigued. This is the main rationale as to why their graph is not fully consistent as the season progresses.

Hence, not adding new players to the squad has only gotten Tottenham back to square one. So, keeping only their best players at hand won’t be enough for them to challenge on all fronts.
