Kevin Owens says Owen Hart is the reason behind him not fully wanting to win the Intercontinental title this week
WWE superstar Kevin Owens is one of the most decorated pro wrestlers right now. He has won belts in NXT, RAW, and SmackDown.
These include the NXT title and the Intercontinental title, which he has won twice in his career. He has a chance to make that thrice, but he isn’t all too interested.
Owens is an Owen Hart fanboy. From his wrestling moniker to his son’s name (Owen Steen), KO has tried to incorporated Hart as much as he can in his personal and professional life.
But oddly, he wants to take it a step further by not winning the Intercontinental title. Owens takes on Apollo Crews, Sami Zayn, and Big E for the IC belt in a fatal 4-way match at SmackDown this Friday.
But he’s not fully interested in taking home the belt from Crews, who won it at WrestleMania 37, because it would mean breaking a ‘streak’ that he cherishes.
Kevin Owens says Intercontinental title will be a ‘brand new belt’ and not the same as the one Owen Hart held
According to him, the total number of Intercontinental title reigns (2) and the cumulative days in those two reigns are the same for him and Owen. He said on WWE The Bump:
“I would love to be Intercontinental champion again. But if I don’t win the title, I won’t be that heartbroken because there is a good reason. As everybody knows, Owen Hart had a very positive influence on my career. I was a big fan of his. I named my son [Owen] after him. My wrestling name ‘Kevin Owens’ is obviously a tribute to my son and Owen Hart. And what some fans have pointed out to me in the past is that me and Owen Hart share a birthday. We were both born on May 7th… but also, what’s cool is we were both Intercontinental champions twice. If you add the total amount of days from both those reigns, we have the exact same amount of days as Intercontinental champion as well.”
But Owens is willing to search for a loophole in this logic. He says that the newly remodelled IC belt is not the same as the one Hart helt, and so, it will be a brand new belt for him.
“But I will allow it because if I win the Intercontinental title now, it is a brand new title. But when I was the Intercontinental champion, it was the same title that Owen Hart held… the actual design of the title. So, on that technicality, I guess if it comes down to it on Friday, sure, I’ll just win the Intercontinental title. Fine, but only because they’re twisting my arm, you know?”
