Nick Diaz MMA Career and UFC record
Nick Diaz began his MMA career when he was just 18 years old. He made his MMA debut on the 31st of August in 2001 at IFC Warriors Challenge.
In two years’ time, Diaz had a record of 7 wins and 2 defeats. In September 2003, that same year, Diaz made his UFC debut, when the promotion hadn’t even hosted 50 numbered events.
He took on Jeremy Jackson, on his MMA debut, at UFC 44, and beat him via. Diaz then faced future welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, who was largely feared back then and knocked him out in the second round at UFC 47.
By November 2006, Diaz had a record of 14 wins 6 losses, with the majority of the losses coming via. decision.
Diaz then moved Elite XC, where he fought for the lightweight title once, but lost (to KJ Noons).
After this came Diaz’s biggest success, he became the inaugural Strikeforce welterweight champion, just in only his third fight in the promotion. He went on to defend his title three times, before returning to the UFC once again.
On his UFC return, he famously beat BJ Penn at UFC 137, which earned him an interim welterweight title shot against Carlos Condit. Diaz lost the fight via. unanimous decision.
A year later he fought the legendary Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title, but once again lost via. unanimous decision.
Diaz’s last fight was against Anderson Silva at UFC 183 on the 31st of January, 2015.
Diaz then returned to UFC action against Lawler in a rematch at UFC 266. However, Diaz lost that battle in the third round.
Nick Diaz Ban
Following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 183, Nick Diaz failed a marijuana test. On the 14th of September in 2015, the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Diaz for 5 years, while also imposing a fine of $165,000.
A while later, in January 2016, the ban was reduced to 18 months, and so was the fine (to $100,000). Although, he was eligible to compete from August 2016, Diaz slowly lost interest and disappeared from the sport.
After a massive hiatus of more than 6 years, Diaz is set to return against Robbie Lawler at UFC 266 on the 25th of September in 2021.
