Three top defenders who Manchester United should sign this month

Manchester United are in the market for quality recruits in order to build their squad to challenge Manchester City next season. Manager Jose Mourinho would be keen on getting players who are ready to perform from day one to mount an obstacle for his city rivals.

The Red Devils have signed Diogo Dalot, Lee Grant and Fred thus far to enhance the quality in every department. They probably need to get one or two more players to get close to City’s quality.

Here are the three marquee players United could stick an eye on to give Mourinho a variety of options ahead of a crucial 2018/19 season:

Ryan Sessegnon (LB)

At a tender age of 18, Ryan Sessegnon has become one of the stars of this division. He had a terrific season with Fulham and has been watched closely by many clubs, including Manchester United in the Premier League. With Luke Shaw set to get a new contract as confirmed by his boss in February, United need a backup for an injury-prone Englishman.

Sessegnon can not only act as a backup but also has the qualities to take over the left-back role at Old Trafford in the future.  He has plenty of time to improve his already “near-perfect” game and become one of the greats in Manchester United history.

Raphael Varane (CB)

United could do with for a high-class centre-back to partner Eric Bailly. Varane can be a dominant figure with his physicality and quick recovery pace to retrieve from a high-line. His distribution from deeper positions makes him an all-around defender, perfect for the Premier League.

The Real Madrid man can become the procured difference-maker at the back for United and probably drive them to a Premier League triumph.

Toby Alderweireld (CB)

If not Varane, Toby Alderweireld isn’t a bad option to have. The Belgian has the experience and know-how of the Premier League, which will help him settle down quickly at the Theatre of Dreams. He possesses great physicality to shrug off centre-forwards and has a tremendous eye for threading incisive passes.

At 29, he is an experienced international centre-back ready to step up and be the man to make the crucial difference at the back for Jose Mourinho’s men. Reports claim that Tottenham could be willing to sell the defender for £60m and United must make use of the opportunity.
