Three top-class football players available for free in the summer

In an era dominated by excessive spending in the transfer market, the idea of free agents seems almost impossible to believe in 2020. After all, it’s becoming a common theme for clubs to splash out millions annually on new players.

Setting this trend in motion was the high-profile takeovers of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. The new owners of these respective clubs have since invested incredible amounts in signing the most talented players. PSG’s €222m capture of Neymar, for example, is the world’s record transfer fee.

Believe it or not, though, clubs can still sign some high-class players on a free transfer these days. And with 2020 here, many of them will be free to begin talks with overseas clubs over a summer transfer as they enter the final six months of their respective contracts.

Without further ado, here are the top 3 players who will be free agents in 2020.

Willian

For six years now, Willian has been starring down the Chelsea flanks on route to a total of five trophies including two Premier League titles and a Europa League.

The Brazil international has remained a prominent figure over at Stamford Bridge despite all the changes. With his contract expiring in 2020, however, the rumoured Barcelona target faces an uncertain future.

Willian has been one of the players who Frank Lampard has relied upon since taking charge at Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian has been a regular in Chelsea’s team this season and has delivered consistent performances.

In a young squad, Willian is one of the few players over 30 and one of the even fewer who shared a dressing room with Lampard as a player. Flighty players might not be the traditional pick for the armband but the Brazilian has revelled in his role as a senior figure in the dressing room this season.

But it remains to be seen if Chelsea will re-sign the 31-year-old onto a new long-term deal or if he will join the list of free agents.

Luka Modric

Modric’s fall from the man who ended Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Ballon d’Or dominance to a fringe player at Real Madrid is quite staggering.

At 34, the clock is beginning to tick on Modric’s career and Los Blancos have already found a potential replacement in Federico Valverde.

Modric, along with Kroos and Casemiro, formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the park at Madrid but his performances have dipped over the past year. With Valverde putting consistent shifts, his place has come under threat under Zidane this season.

Although Modric’s recent strong performances could give Zinedine Zidane some food for thought, he will be available for free.

Christian Eriksen

The never-ending Eriksen transfer saga will finally come to an end in 2020 – one way or another.

After a summer exit fell through, the Dane has struggled to regain his form in north London this season, thus fuelling the ever-increasing likelihood that he will become a free agent soon.

New manager Jose Mourinho recently hinted that could be the case after confirming Eriksen has made a decision over his future.

Tottenham haven’t made any ground with Eriksen over a new contract as of yet. The Denmark midfielder would be a massive loss for Spurs if he doesn’t commit his future anytime soon.
