Why Manchester City should move for Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester City have joined Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race to sign Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman.

Coman, 23, is a product of the PSG youth academy. The youngster left the club in 2014, joining Juventus on a free transfer. Having made just 22 appearances for the Bianconeri, the Frenchman left the club in 2015, joining Bayern Munich initially on a two-year loan before making the transfer permanent in 2017.

Since joining the German giants, the 23-year-old has established himself as one of the top young wingers in Europe. Till date, Coman has made 147 appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring 30 goals and assisting 33.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing season in comparison to the lofty standards they set for themselves last season. While they have won the Carabao Cup and are still in contention for the FA Cup and Champions League, their Premier League campaign has been a letdown.

Prior to football getting suspended, Manchester City were 25 points behind league leaders Liverpool. The absence of a rock-solid defence has been a problem for the Sky Blues this season. And that is something that manager Pep Guardiola should address next term.

However, along with defensive reinforcements, the Cityzens should also look to strengthen their attacking unit in the summer. Raheem Sterling has been the go-to man on the flanks for Manchester City this term, while Riyad Mahrez has also stepped up admirably.

However, there is not much depth beyond the duo. Bernardo Silva has been used in a central role regularly this season and is likely to be moved into that role next term once David Silva leaves.

Leroy Sane could be on his way out from Man City

Then, there is the question over the future of Leroy Sane. The German winger, who has spent the entire season out injured, is a top target for Bayern Munich. And with just a year left on his contract, City may offload him this summer. This would warrant bringing in a new winger.

Coman, to that end, would be a good option for the club. The 23-year-old has accrued plenty of experience at such a young age, with 179 career appearances already. He has impressed during his time at Bayern. In the 2019/20 campaign, the Frenchman has bagged 5 goals and assists apiece in 24 matches in all competitions.

In addition, Coman is a player who Guardiola knows very well. It was the Manchester City manager who signed the winger at Bayern in 2015 and worked with him for a season before moving to England.

Verdict

Manchester City should add more depth and quality to their wings if they are to reclaim the Premier League title next term. With Leroy Sane facing an uncertain future, it would be wise for the club to invest in a new wide player.

And Coman, in that regard, would be a good addition. He is someone who Guardiola has already worked with. Moreover, the Frenchman has done well at Bayern and would be a like-to-like replacement for Sane.
