Five things we learnt from the first few games in the Premier League
The new Premier League season is up and running. There were plenty of talking points from the opening games last weekend.
The newcomers got a taste of what it’s like in the top-flight, while the defending champions continued to showcase their will to reclaim the crown. Here are five talking points from the opening few games of the most exhilarating league in Europe:
1) Arsenal and Fulham get an early reality check
Arsenal began their new era under Unai Emery with a 0-2 loss at home to defending champions Manchester City. Well, losing to a team like that doesn’t attach any shame but the Gunners were handed a stern reality check.
However, one must bear in mind that they purchased some new players this summer while also appointing a new manager. Hence, they need to have patience to re-build the structure of the team, which looks twitchy right now.
Meanwhile, Fulham, the big-spending newcomers, were given a taste of the Premier League when Crystal Palace came to Craven Cottage and beat them 2-0. With an influx of many new players, manager Slavisa Jokanovic must ensure things don’t take a wrong turn and focus towards securing a positive outcome.
2) Champions show their worth
Manchester City displayed their quality despite several first-choice players not starting the game against Arsenal. Pep Guardiola’s men played with the same level of intensity and verve, which is a terrifying prospect for their rivals. The Cityzens certainly showed their worth and dethroning them certainly won’t be an easy task.
3) Liverpool meet lofty expectations from the beginning
Liverpool have spent big but they have done so sensibly. And their efforts translated into an incredible result during their first game of the season. The Reds proved their prominence by thrashing West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield. It was a performance filled with confidence, excitement and patience, the latter of which will be needed against deep-defending teams.
New boy Naby Keita was fantastic, and James Milner continues to improve despite being on the wrong side of 30.
4) Cardiff show little promise, Huddersfield find it tough
Cardiff failed to provide early promise as they started their top-flight campaign with a 0-2 loss against Bournemouth. Neil Warnock must push his side to play a desirable brand of football, else they might find it difficult to get safely through this season.
Huddersfield, on the other hand, were quite unimpressive in their 0-3 defeat against Chelsea. They barely managed to survive in the Premier League last season, meaning the Terriers must do things differently this time. David Wagner must add goal-scorers to his starting line-up, or the inevitable may happen in ten months’ time.

5.) Sarri-ball is underway
Chelsea displayed a commanding performance against Huddersfield and looked quite strong. The Premier League received glimpses of Sarri’s famous high-pressing passing game, which was delightful. Going forward, the Blues will certainly be an exciting prospect to watch this season.
