According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Birmingham Mail), Wolves have shown an interest in Real Madrid youngster Oscar Rodriguez.
21-year-old midfielder Rodriguez is currently on a season-long loan with La Liga side Leganes and is expected to return to his parent club at the end of this season.
However, the report also claims that the creative playmaker is most likely to leave the Bernabeu this summer. However, the Spanish giants are considering inserting a repurchase option into his deal, and is valued at around €20million.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, has enjoyed rare individual success at Leganes this season despite his side facing an almost certain relegation as they linger just one place above bottom placers Espanyol.
At present, Rodriguez is his side’s top goal-scorer and assist-provider in the league with 7 goals and 2 assists respectively from 26 matches. However, this is not the first time the youngster’s talent has grabbed some attention.
The Real Madrid academy graduate first moved to Leganes on loan last season and turned a few heads with four goals and as many assists in his maiden campaign. With his performances improving with time and Rodriguez evolving into one of Leganes’ top players this season, Premier League side Wolves have shown an interest in him.
The Nuno Espirito Santo-led side, meanwhile, are enjoying one of their best campaigns in recent times after climbing to sixth in the table. However, they lack a creative playmaker in their midst, and Santo is aware that he needs to bring reinforcements next season if they wish to better their displays.
That said, a move for the young and talented Rodriguez seems like a welcome sign. Wolves currently just have veteran midfielder Joao Moutinho as the only creative option. However, he plays a little deeper and is more of a central midfielder.
Also, he will turn 34 this September, meaning Wolves really need to rope in a new face for the days to come. Wolves also have four other midfielders in their mix but none of them plays much of a creative role, making it evident that the side is devoid of players in that role.
Hence, Rodriguez looks like a perfect fit at the Molineux and they should land him soon if they wish to climb the table next season.
At the moment, Wolves lack a single creative player in their midfield and young Rodriguez could be a valued-added addition to their squad. Moreover, he is still young and can develop further under the guidance of Nuno. The Spaniard could prove to be an excellent future investment.
