Leeds United fought tooth-and-nail to finish in the 13th spot in the Championship last season. The club have been far from the same one that made it to the Champions League semi-finals in 2001. After the dismal run, Paul Heckingbottom was sacked and the new manager must add some firepower to the squad before the start of the new campaign.
The Peacocks found it difficult to score goals in the previous campaign and they could surely use some reinforcements in that department. The attack lacked fluidity and cohesion in the final third and there was no real finisher in the squad.
Abel Hernandez is a player whose name has often popped up on their list and it looks like it just might happen this time. The Uruguay-born striker will bring in ample experience as well as talent. Hernandez has played against a number of defenders in the Premier League and will surely be an upgrade to the squad.
The striker recently took to Twitter to confirm that he will leave Hull City on a free transfer this summer. Hernandez thanked the Hull fans for their support, before confirming that he hasn’t agreed to a new contract.
The striker is a free agent now, meaning he can join whichever team he prefers. Hernandez scored 39 goals in 110 appearances for Hull since signing from Palermo for a club-record £10m fee.
The Uruguayan hitman managed just four goals in the Premier League during the 2014/15 season. However, he hit back in the 2015/16 campaign, scoring 20 league goals to send Hull back to the top flight.
Over the course of the last term, Hernandez scored 8 goals and provided 1 assist in 8 appearances for the Tigers. He averaged 3.1 shots per game, which could be the kind of threat Leeds desperately need.
Meanwhile, Leeds scored 59 goals and conceded 64 times in the recently concluded season. And provided the deal goes through, Hernandez must bring about a change in those numbers.
With Hull out of the way, Leeds may fancy their chances of securing a major coup by bringing Hernandez to West Yorkshire to lead their attack next season.
