Dwight Gayle may have underwhelmed with Newcastle United last season but this term, he has been working wonders for West Bromwich Albion. Following a season of mediocrity under Rafael Benitez, the Magpies loaned him out to the relegated Baggies.
Plying their trade in the Championship this season, West Brom have impressed and Gayle has been at the centre of all things good for the club. In such a situation, it does raise questions as to whether or not they should make his loan deal a permanent one.
In a recent report by Birmingham Live, Gayle did mention that the thought of staying put at West Brom “crossed his mind”. However, it is too early to make a solid decision for either party.
A lot of it will depend on how Gayle continues to perform till the end of the season but if his current performances are anything to go by, West Brom should not hesitate to sign him on a permanent basis once his loan expires.
The 28-year-old has scored 9 goals in 14 Championship appearances thus far. He also chipped in with an assist while registering an average of 2.1 shots per game.
A solid counter-attacking threat, Gayle has utilized his pace to good effect under Darren Moore’s tutelage. Known for linking the play with short yet effective passes, the Englishman has truly unlocked a new aspect of his game at the Hawthorns.
To be fair, Newcastle are also struggling for goals right now. They oversaw a similar situation with Aleksandar Mitrovic the last term.
The Serbian striker was loaned out to Fulham in the Championship and he played a starring role for them in the latter half of the season, guiding the Cottagers to the Premier League. As a result, they signed him on a permanent basis and it looks like Gayle might go down the same road with West Brom.
Currently placed 5th in the standings, West Brom are in the reckoning for a promotion to the top-flight and if that happens, they will need a player like Gayle.

The Magpies, on the other hand, could be embroiled in a relegation battle at the end of the season. Hence, to continue progressing and playing to the best of his abilities, perhaps Gayle should consider joining West Brom for good.
