The 32-year-old Argentine forward started his youth career at Independiente’s youth setup back in his homeland in 1997. Even before he was promoted to the senior side, he made a few appearances for them when he was still in the youth side.

In 2004, he was promoted to the senior side and went on to make 36 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals in the process. Atletico Madrid signed him in 2006 and he had a hugely prolific spell for the Spanish side. In 230 games, he scored 100 goals and also provided 46 assists (source – Transfermarkt).

The best of Aguero was yet to come as he swapped Madrid for Manchester. One of the early signings of the Sheikh Mansour era, Aguero has gone on to reach unimaginable heights in the blue half of Manchester. He is their top scorer of all-time, with 254 goals in just 370 appearances.

Why Man City should extend Aguero’s contract soon

It may look like the striker is nearing his end due to age but Aguero looks anything but done at the club. He scored 23 goals last term despite being injured for most of the season. The fact that he has kept a younger Gabriel Jesus out of the team when he’s fit speaks volumes about his abilities.

While City might eventually have to replace him, with his current form, it looks like it will be a few years before that happens. In the meantime, they need to renew his existing deal, which expires at the end of the ongoing season. Gabriel Jesus does have the potential but he has a tendency to blow hot and cold.

City need someone to keep firing in the goals at least until they get an established goalscorer. That may be easier said than done, given the current situation of the footballing world. So the club would be best served to start talks with the forward regarding an extension on his current deal.
