Tottenham Hotspur have been consistently competing across all competitions lately. Spurs finished 4th in the Premier League last season, ahead of London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal. In fact, they have managed to secure a berth in the Champions League for the third consecutive season.
Tottenham enjoyed a relatively fine season, albeit trophyless, as they reached the FA Cup semi-finals. A spirited second-half comeback by Juventus at Wembley knocked Spurs out of the Champions League in the Round of 16.
Since Pochettino took over in 2014, Spurs have been on an upward curve. All he needs to do now is turn the North London outfit from perennial contenders to winners. To do so, Tottenham need to stop their over-reliance on star striker Harry Kane, who scored an incredible 41 goals and provided 5 assists in 48 matches last season.
Son Heung-min may have already taken a little pressure off the Three Lions’ captain but that is not enough. The South Korea international plundered in 18 goals and assisted a further 11 goals in 53 appearances last season.
The only centre-forward on Spurs’ books is 33-year-old Fernando Llorente, who scored one goal in 16 appearances in the whole season. That the ageing Spaniard only made a single start and clocked 227 minutes of football in a whole season is telling.
Thus, Spurs need to invest in another striker this summer. Ideally, a young centre-forward should be the perfect fit for the club. So, who fits the bill? Step forward Celtic star, Moussa Dembele.
At only 21 years of age, Dembele represents an investment for both the present and the future. He is the perfect attacking threat that Tottenham clearly need. Since Celtic signed him from Fulham back in the summer of 2016, he has gone on to become one of the club’s leading attacking outlets.
Dembele scored 16 goals and assisted 9 more to help The Hoops to an unprecedented double-treble. He may have won everything in Scotland, but a transfer to Tottenham would represent a move to the next level in his career as a player. For all of Celtic’s dominance in Scotland, Brendan Rogers’ side has failed to make an impact in European football and Tottenham would offer just that.
In fact, Spurs would be the perfect place for Dembele to turn into a world-class talent. With virtually no competition outside the starting duo of Kane and Son, a move to London would guarantee playing minutes to Dembele.
The need to take some responsibility off Kane would provide the youngster with a chance to prove himself. In return, Tottenham would receive a real talent who has immense potential to explode to unimaginable heights.
Dembele has a good amount of experience despite his young age and has averaged a goal every 151 minutes. Playing alongside talents like Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Eric Lamela, you can bet that Dembele will only get better.
However, to Celtic, Dembele would simply be difficult to replace. For Tottenham though, they will sign a player who is nothing short of a gem.
