Tottenham Hotspur Opinion: Domagoj Vida signing will be a grave mistake

According to recently published report by Turkish news outlet Takvim, Tottenham Hotspur are said to be quite keen on signing Besiktas centre-half Domagoj Vida as they look to strengthen their defensive ranks in order to continually challenge for the title.

Mauricio Pochettino has managed to build a fairly formidable team at Tottenham and the grand opening of their new stadium is bound to fill the players with confidence as well.

Domagoj Vida would come in as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who has been linked with a variety of clubs this summer, as suggested by The Mirror

If Manchester United do secure the signing of the Belgian veteran in the summer, Spurs could find themselves short-staffed for next season. That’s a mistake that they don’t want to make considering that they had a fairly dreadful Christmas period because of a sudden flurry of first-team injuries.

Domagoj Vida is a Croatian international centre-half who really rose to fame at the recently completed FIFA World Cup where he was a star performer in their march to the final of the competition.

A product of the NK Osijek academy, the 29-year-old defender spent a majority of his time at Dynamo Kyiv.

His first real European break came when he was offered a move to Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2010. After a fairly unhappy year in Germany, he moved on to Dinamo Zagreb in the next summer.

It was at Zagreb that the Croatian impressed and earned himself a switch to Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kyiv. He played more than a 150 matches for the side and managed to even score 13 goals during his time.

After 5 years at the club, Vida was finally released by Kyiv in 2018 after which he went on to join Turkish outfit Besiktas. Although he has impressed in the Turkish Super Lig this season, his football isn’t the kind thats going to fill anyone with too much confidence.

The defender had an excellent World Cup in Russia last year and this season, he has shown up for his club at times and put in some rather inspiring displays.

He has featured in 25 league games and has been their defensive commander for the length of the campaign – a period during which he even managed to notch up a goal and assist to his name as well.

While Spurs have been on the lookout for top centre-halves for quite a while now, taking drastic measures such as signing a highly questionable 29-year-old is unnecessary.

Pochettino will do well to play his cards elsewhere as Vida’s track record doesn’t really set him up well for Premier League football.
