The world No. 40 Leylah Fernandez locks horns with America’s Elizabeth Mandlik in the round of 32 of the Abierto Tampico.
Leylah Fernandez
The 20-year-old produced a fine performance at the Monterrey Open. She entered the tournament as the defending champion and won the title after defeating Camila Osorio in the final. Her other notable performance came in the French Open where she made it to the quarterfinals with stunning victories against the likes of Kristina Mladenovic, Katerina Siniakova, Belinda Bencic, and Amanda Anisimova. This was the first time Fernandez reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam event after her dream run to the finals of the 2021 US Open.
She most recently played in the Guadalajara Open. Her run ended in the first round after she went down fighting against Belinda Bencic. Fernandez lost in the first match of the doubles event and her sole focus would now be on the singles event and she would be hoping to go the distance.
Elizabeth Mandlik
The American tennis pro has produced some fine results on the ITF Circuit this year. She won her first time of the season in Brazil in January and followed it up with another title in the same country. After a bit of a dry spell, Mandlik won her third title in June in her own country. In the same month, Mandlik produced her best result on the WTA Tour as she reached the round of 16 at the Silicon Valley Classic. She defeated Alison Riske-Amritraj in the first round. This was her first win in a WTA tournament.
The 20-year-old made it to the second round of the US Open. She lost to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur in straight sets. Mandlik most recently played in the Guadalajara Open but lost her qualifying match against compatriot Asia Muhammad.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not faced each other before.
Prediction: Leylah Fernandez to win in straight sets.
