The world No. 55 Magda Linette will square off against the world No. 72 Rebecca Marino in the semifinals of Abierto Tampico on Friday.
Magda Linette
The 30-year-old entered the tournament on the back of a disappointing campaign in the Guadalajara Open. She crashed out of the tournament in the first round following a defeat to Madison Keys in straight sets. However, she has bounced back and performed exceedingly well at the Abierto Tampico so far and has won all her matches in straight sets.
The Polish veteran began her campaign with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-0 win against Bianca Jolie Fernandez. In the round of 16, Linette won the first set against Renata Zarazua with relative ease before being stretched in the second set. The match eventually ended 6-3, 7-5 in favor of the experienced campaigner. In the quarterfinals, Linette was up against three-time Grand Slam champion in doubles – Elise Mertens. The Belgian tennis pro failed to impress as she went down 5-7, 2-6 to Linette.
Rebecca Marino
The Canadian tennis pro fared better at the Guadalajara Open. She entered the main draw after winning a couple of qualifiers. In the first round, she defeated Ann Li before going down fighting against the world No. 6 – Caroline Garcia.
Marino began her campaign in the ongoing tournament with a win in straight sets against Varvara Flink 6-3, 7-5. In the round of 16, Marino had to dig deep to outlast a determined Moyuka Uchijima. The match ended 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 in favor of the 31-year-old. In the quarterfinals, Marino stunned the third seed – Leylah Fernandez with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Magda Linette. She defeated Marino in straight sets in the Chennai Open last month.
