4th seed Veronika Kudermetova and 8th seed Liudmila Samsonova collide in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Open on Friday.
Veronika Kudermetova
The 25-year-old has reached the quarterfinals for the third time in 2023. She came into the tournament on the back of a second-round exit at the Australian Open.
Kudermetova received a bye into the round of 16. She faced the Belgian veteran, Elise Mertens in the round of 16. The first set was dominated by Kudermetova but Mertens made her work hard in the second set. The match eventually ended in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 in favor of the Russian youngster.
Liudmila Samsonova
The world No. 19 did not have a great start to the season. This is her best result of the season so far. Like Kudermetova, Samsonova also exited in the second round of the Australian Open.
Samsonova began her campaign in Abu Dhabi with a come-from-behind win against America’s Claire Liu. The former emerged victorious in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Samsonova had a commendable win percentage of 84 on the first serve. In the round of 16, Samsonova defeated Barbora Krejcikova in two competitive sets. The match ended 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in favor of the Russian star.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline is intriguingly poised at 2-1 in favor of Veronika Kudermetova as of now. Kudermetova defeated Samsonova in their most recent encounter in the round of 16 of the Berlin Open in 2022 in three sets.
Prediction: Veronika Kudermetova to win in three sets.
