Fourth seed Veronika Kudermetova squares off against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu in the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International 1 on Friday.
The world No. 9 has had smooth sailing so far in the competition and it’s not like she has faced weak opponents. Kudermetova has looked compact and is yet to drop a set.
The Russian star began the new season with a comprehensive win over the talented Amanda Anisimova. Kudermetova fired in 7 aces and won the match 6-3, 6-0. In the round of 16, Kudermetova locked horns with 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian star had a great start to the match and won the first four games in the first set. However, Kudermetova pulled her socks up and finished the match by winning 12 consecutive games.
The 32-year-old lost the first set in her first-round match against Shelby Rogers. In the second set, Begu fought back and won by the barest of margins. The Romanian veteran produced a sensational performance in the third set and won the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
Begu came into the round of 16 beaming with the confidence she gathered from the last set she played against Rogers. The world No. 34 defeated seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko in a convincing fashion. The match ended in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. In this match, Begu almost equaled Kudermetova, winning 11 games in a row to beat Ostapenko for the second time in her career.
Veronika Kudermetova has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Irina-Camelia Begu. The Russian star got the win at the 2018 Shenzhen Open in three sets.
Prediction: Veronika Kudermetova to win in three sets.
