Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko faces Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya in the round of 32 of the Adelaide International 2 on Tuesday.
The experienced campaigner will look to bounce back strongly after starting the season on a low note at the Adelaide International 1. Ostapenko comprehensively defeated Karolina Pliskova in the round of 32. However, Ostapenko went down to Irina-Camelia Begu in the following round in a match where nothing worked for the Latvian star.
Ostapenko teamed with Lyudmyla Kichenok in the doubles event at the Adelaide International 1. They were ousted in the semifinals by the American duo of Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad. Ostapenko will be looking forward to going deep into the Adelaide International 2 event to get ample practice for the upcoming Australian Open that gets underway on January 16.
The 24-year-old had a nice end to 2022 as she reached the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open but had to retire mid-match owing to injury. She defeated the likes of Elise Mertens and Daria Kasatkina in the campaign.
In 2023, Kalinskaya lost her first qualifying match at the Adelaide International 1 against eventual finalist Linda Noskova. In the qualifiers of the Adelaide International 2, Kalinskaya defeated Belarusia’s Aliaksandra Sasnovich and America’s Alison Riske-Amritraj to advance to the main draw. Let’s see if Kalinskaya has a deep run at the tournament like Noskova at the Adelaide International 1.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have never faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Jelena Ostapenko to win in straight sets.
