Two Spaniards Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina lock horns in the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International 2 on Thursday.
The fourth seed has reached his first quarterfinal of the new season in just the second tournament he is playing. Bautista Agut played the Adelaide International 1 and lost against eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda in the round of 16.
In the Adelaide International 2, the experienced Spaniard received a bye into the second round. He faced Robin Haase and defeated the Dutchman in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The world No. 26 hit 10 aces in the match and won 95 points.
The 23-year-old has played a couple of matches so far in the competition and is yet to lose a set. He began his campaign in Adelaide with a win over the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals winner Brandon Nakashima. The first set was one-sided as Davidovich Fokina won 6-2. In the second set, the American youngster fought hard but lost in the tiebreak. The match ended 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in favor of the 7th seed.
Davidovich Fokina went on to defeat Australia’s John Millman in the round of 16. This was a solid performance from the Spaniard as he won the match 6-3, 6-3.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have faced each other twice. The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1. Bautista Agut won their last encounter at the 2022 Qatar Open 6-1, 6-1.
