South Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon squares off against Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International 2 on Thursday.
The 25-year-old started the new season by taking part in the Adelaide International 1. He made it to the main draw after defeating Dominic Thiem and Taro Daniel in the qualifiers. Soon-woo Kwon was outplayed by Jack Draper in the round of 32.
In Adelaide International 2, the South Korean star defeated Vasek Pospisil and Tomas Machac to make it to the main draw. Machac once again faced Soon-woo Kwon in the round of 32 by virtue of becoming lucky loser. The result did not change as Kwon won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. In the round of 16, the world No. 84 got the better of second seed Pablo Carreno Busta after dropping the first set. The match ended 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The 24-year-old was ousted in the round of 32 of the Adelaide International 1 by Roman Safiullin of Russia. Ymer has had a much better campaign in Adelaide International 2.
Ymer edged past Emil Ruusuvuori in the round of 32 in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The former followed it up with another win in three sets against Mackenzie McDonald in the round of 16. However, this win will be more special as Ymer came back after losing the first set. The Swedish youngster won the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Mikael Ymer and Soon-woo Kwon faced each other at the 2022 edition of the Adelaide International 1. The former won the match 6-3, 6-2, and has a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline.
Prediction: Mikael Ymer to win in three sets.
