AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash Results and Grades: AEW had some incredible matches set for 2021 as the first Dynamite of the year was taking place.

This was back to the regular storylines after last week’s excellent and heart-warming tribute to Brodie Lee took place.

Hikaru Shida and Kenny Omega were to defend their titles on the show but we start off this AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash results and grades piece with a big tag team match.

Young Bucks and SCU vs Acclaimed and Hybrid 2

The match was expected to be crazy but the heels did well to isolate Christopher Daniels of SCU.

Both set of stars had their bits to do in a hectic match but it was Daniels who got the win in the end.

Kazarian then said that if he and Daniels lost their next match, they would end their team. Daniels then challenged The Bucks for a shot at the AEW Tag titles.

Grade B

This was a great way to kick-off the show and it will be interesting to see how Daniels and Kazarian do in their possible match against The Bucks.

Moxley is back

Former champion Jon Moxley was back after losing to Omega a while back.

Moxley claimed he wouldn’t interfere in the main event but promised that Omega wasn’t safe and he was coming for him.

Grade A

Moxley on the microphone has been gold in AEW and this was another example of just how good he is.

It will be interesting to see how he goes about reclaiming his title from Omega.

Wardlow vs Hager

Jake Hager took on Wardlow in a huge match next as this was to decide a dispute in the Inner Circle.

This was a crazy match as both stars did their all and it was Wardlow who came out on top.

The other Inner Circle members came out to check on both and it seems the problems are sorted, for now.

Wardlow beats Hager

Grade B

This match was everything that a slobber knocker should be. Both fighters gave it their all and it will be interesting to see how the Inner Circle deals with all this now.

Allin vs Cage weigh in

Darby Allin was presented with a new TNT title before the champion weighed in against his rival, Brian Cage.

Cage had a 100-pound advantage over Allin and was accompanied by Team Taz. However, Sting came out to support Allin and the segment ended with a stare down.

Grade C

This was a decent enough segment but it could have been a lot better if we finally saw Sting do some action.

Sydal vs Rhodes

Snoop Dogg accompanied Cody Rhodes for his clash against Matt Sydal. Cody attacked the injured knee of Sydal during the match but it was Sydal who almost got a shock win.

However, Cody took control back of the match and got the win in the end.

Serpentico and Luther came out to attack Cody and Sydal after the match but it ended up with Dogg hitting a splash from the top rope on Serpentico.

Rhodes beats Sydal

Grade B

Cody was excellent in this match but it was great seeing Sydal also get some action. Dogg was the fun part in all this, even if his splash wasn’t the best seen in an AEW ring.

Shida vs Abadon

Abadon had been taunting and targeting Shida for a long time and this was for the Women’s title.

Shida attacked Abadon with a kendo stick before the match but that didn’t affect the challenger.

Abadon even bit the neck of Shida but it was still the champion who got the win in the end.

Shida beats Abadon

Grade B

This match should have gone out a little longer as Abadon wasn’t given a lot of time to shine.

AEW has been a little lax when it comes to female matches and this was another example of it.

Fenix vs Omega

Omega put up his title on the line against Rey Fenix and it was the challenger who put Omega in all sorts of trouble early on.

However, Omega was able to get the win in the end after an impressive finisher. Don Callis then took the microphone and it was Eddie Kingston, Butcher and Blade beating up PAC and Penta.

Omega was going to destroy Fenix further but Moxley made the save with a baseball bat. However, Impact Wrestling champions, Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson attacked Moxley.

Moxley was further beaten with the bat before Brian Pillman and Griff Garrison tried to make the save and failed.

The Young Bucks finally came out and ended up teaming up with the heels to form the Bullet Club again.

Omega beats Fenix

Grade A

The match as it is was great but the real talking point was what happened after it. Fenix was incredible and could have won the title on any other day.

However, the former of the Bullet Club on AEW and Impact is great news and this opens a lot of options for the Bucks and the other stars too.
