Financial details emerge about AEW’s entry into wrestling world
AEW owner Tony Khan has taken huge strides to compete with WWE ever since its inception in 2019. The company is outnumbering McMahon’s WWE in ticket sales in some parts of United States of America.
Financial details of how the company started were shared thanks to a Forbes article and some of the biggest investors were also provided.
Khan started AEW with a major investment from his father, billionaire Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan valued up to $100 million. AEW also signed a $43.75 million deal for its programming on TNT last year.
The largest influx in the company is with the WarnerMedia deal which runs till 2023 and is worth $175 million. AEW will resume touring in July moving to Miami, Dallas and Texas.
Tony also spoke about how the demise of WCW allowed them a space to compete with WWE. Shahid also didn’t think starting AEW was a good idea, but told his son to spend some of his vast fortune while he (Tony’s father) was still alive.
The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes are Vice-Presidents of the new promotion. Rhodes, was one of the first stars to be signed up after his WWE release.
Tony Khan’s Rise to Fame
Khan was born in 1982, born to billionaire Shahid Khan and Ann Carlson Khan. His first love for wrestling began in August 1996 watching the Extreme Championship Wrestling.
Khan kept watching WWE and McMahon’s business masterclass while he joined the University of Illinois. He also worked in the analytics team with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Premier League Club, Fulham.
After the success of AEW, a lot of WWE legends like Sting, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry joined Khan’s promotion. The company is enjoying further success after signing Andrade El Idolo, who was released by WWE last year.
AEW signed a partnership with IMPACT Wrestling and look set to attempt to rival the monopoly of WWE. The road ahead is very long but the signs are promising.
