AEW has recently signed the likes of William Regal and Swerve Strickland from WWE. Both of them made their AEW debut at AEW Revolution earlier this month.
This week on AEW Dynamite, The Bunny was set to face an unknown opponent in a qualifying match for the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. The unknown opponent was the mystery talent that AEW President Tony Khan had been teasing.
The Bunny made her entrance first and waited for her opponent. Toni Storm came out through the curtains to the delight of the fans in attendance.
Storm defeated The Bunny in a closely fought contest. The 26-year-old requested her release from WWE towards the end of December and it was granted. She completed her 90-day non-compete clause on Tuesday.
The Late, great Owen Hart was the younger brother of WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. Owen suffered a terrible fall from the rafters at the Over the Edge pay-per-view in 1999, which led to his demise.
There are going to be separate tournaments for men and women. The qualifying matches will be running for the next few weeks. The main stage of the tournament will commence on the May 11 edition of AEW Dynamite which will be held at the UBS Arena in Long Island, New York.
The finals of the men’s and women’s tournaments will be held at the 2022 AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view on May 29 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Dr. Martha Hart will be presenting the winners with their respective trophies at Double or Nothing.
The trophy has been called “The Owen” Cup in memory of Owen Hart. Toni Storm became the first woman to win a qualifying match in the aforementioned tournament.
