The owner of All Elite Wrestling, Tony Khan, made a major announcement this week on Dynamite
Tony Khan revealed that he now owns the promotion which had been on a hiatus since December’s Final Battle pay-per-view. Khan has now acquired brand, Ring of Honor.
After teasing a major announcement, Tony Khan started this week’s AEW Dynamite revealing he has purchased Ring of Honor. ROH was formerly owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group. They bought the company in 2011 from Cary Silkin.
The deal includes ROH’s intellectual property, production equipment, brand assets, video library and more. The purchase is being completed through an entity which is entirely owned by Khan. The financial terms weren’t disclosed as yet.
ROH has been a leader in non-WWE professional wrestling for 20 years. ROH was launched in 2002 and was a launching pad for many wrestlers. Wrestlers who would make it big in WWE later on. The likes of CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe, Seth Rollins, Jon Moxley, Keith Lee, and Bryan Danielson had all been in ROH towards the nascent stages of their careers.
Many were speculating Tony Khan’s announcement to be a deal with HBO Max. This acquisition of ROH though, will only land him a better deal now with HBO Max.
An elated Tony Khan, entered the ring this week on Dynamite and said: “Today, I signed a deal. I just became the new owner of Ring of Honor!”
The crowd gave a huge pop as the announcement was made.
ROH to return with Supercard of Honor
The event will be held in Garland, Texas on Friday, April 1. The show will be headlined by Jonathan Gresham and Bandido. They will be squaring up against each other to determine the undisputed ROH World Champion.
Announcer Ian Riccaboni, also mentioned ROH television tapings for Sunday, April 10 IN Philadelphia.
Ever since the news broke out, twitter has been buzzing. Here’s a look at the reactions from the fans on the popular social media platform:
Dynamite kicked off with two ROH originals, Bryan Danielson versus Christopher Daniels. It was a fitting way to start the show after the major announcement.
Now, it’s going to be interesting to see what plans Tony Khan has with ROH. Does he make it the developmental wing for AEW? Like NXT 2.0 is for WWE. Only time will tell, but wrestling lovers across the world are rejoicing, as ROH holds a very special place in their hearts.
