According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester City are interested in signing Leicester City star Harry Maguire in the summer transfer window.
Vincent Kompany, 33, announced his departure from the club on Monday after signing a three-year deal with former side Anderlecht to become player-manager. The Belgian will leave Manchester City this summer after 11 years of service to the treble winners.
To replace Kompany, City boss Pep Guardiola has targeted Maguire, who signed a five-year deal with Leicester City last summer. The Foxes do not want to sell their star defender this summer, which means Manchester City have to break their bank for his signature.
That being said, should City go for Maguire to replace the outgoing Kompany?
City have tasted huge success under Pep Guardiola and are planning for more in the future. Having won all domestic trophies in England, Guardiola’s aim will be to get his icy hands on the Champions League next season and for that, he’ll need to board to splash heavily again this summer.
There are a few areas that need strengthening, including finding the long-term replacements for Kompany and Fernandinho. Both Kompany and Fernandinho have been brilliant servants at the club, but the former is set to depart City in June after re-signing with Anderlecht.
Thus, Guardiola needs to start looking towards the future, especially when it comes to replacing Kompany, and a move for Harry Maguire would certainly help them with that.
Maguire has established himself to be one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League in recent times, having shone for Leicester and the England national team at last summer’s World Cup.
He is a modern-day centre-half, noted for his ball-playing abilities. The 26-year-old is also blessed with sheer strength and power which he uses to shrug of players while bulldozing through the middle with the ball at times.
The England international is adept at initiating attacks from the ball with his passing and crossing abilities. Due to his towering frame, he is an asset to have on both the ends of the pitch during set-pieces. At 26, Maguire is at a very good age to make the step up and he’ll potentially bring balance to the City defence alongside left-footed Aymeric Laporte.
The former Sheffield United and Hull City defender has all the tools needed to be a success at City. He could be the missing jigsaw to help the Cityzens win the coveted Champions League trophy.
