Tomljanovic was born in Zagreb to a Croatian father Ratko Tomljanovic and a Bosniak mother Emina. Ratko played handball professionally and won the 1992 and 1993 handball European Cup tournaments. Ajla has an older sister Hana, who played tennis for the University of Virginia.
