Alex de Minaur Career

Alex de Minaur began playing tennis at age three and turned pro in 2015. De Minaur had a good junior career and reached a career-high ranking of 2 on the juniors circuit and won the 2016 Australian Open boys’ doubles title alongside Blake Ellis.

De Minaur made his professional debut in July 2015 at the Spain F22, reaching the quarterfinals. He was given a wildcard into the qualifying rounds of the 2016 Australian Open, but lost in round one. De Minaur then spent the majority of the 2016 season playing on the ITF circuit in Spain, reaching two finals. Also, he played his first ATP Challenger Tour final in Eckental, Germany but lost in the final.

In 2017, De Minaur played Brisbane International, and his performance helped him reach his first ATP Tour main draw. However, he lost in the first round. Finally, De Minaur made his Grand Slam debut at the 2017 Australian Open after receiving a wildcard. He eventually lost in round two. In May 2107, De Minaur made his French Open debut after being awarded a wildcard. Next, he was also awarded a wildcard for the 2017 US Open. De Minaur finished the year with a singles ranking of No. 208.

The year 2018 was a breakthrough year for De Minaur. He put up an impressive performance at Brisbane International but lost in the semi-finals. He then played the 2018 Sydney International, an ATP Tour event. In Sydney, De Minaur reached the finals. However, he lost the finals against Daniil Medvedev. De Minaur also played several Grand Slam events and had better results than previous year.

The year 2019 was perhaps the best year in De Minaur’s career. He played the 2019 Sydney International and defeated Andreas Seppi in the finals to claim his first career ATP title. De Minaur won his second ATP title at 2019 Atlanta Open by defeating Taylor Fritz in the finals. Subsequently, in September 2019, De Minaur claimed his third ATP title by defeating Adrian Mannarino in two sets in the final of the Zhuhai Championships. At the Swiss Indoors, De Minaur reached the final of an ATP 500 event for the second time in his career, but lost to Roger Federer in the final. However, De Minaur’s Swiss Indoors result help reach him a then career-high ranking of World No. 18.

In 2020, De Minaur couldn’t play much because of injury and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, at the Cincinnati Masters, in the doubles event, De Minaur and Pablo Carreño Busta won the title beating Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski in the final. De Minaur ended the year 2020 ranked No. 23.

In 2021, De Minaur won his first ATP title on grass and his fifth ATP title in his career at the Eastbourne International defeating Lorenzo Sonego in the final. With this win, De Minaur reached a new career-high singles ranking of No. 15. However, he ended the year ranked No. 34.

In 2022, De Minaur reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the third time in his career and for the first time at the Australian Open. However, he lost the fourth round to Jannik Sinner in straight sets.
