Just after a month, there are reports that Amazon’s MMORPG New World is losing players. Read on to know more.
While it appeared that Amazon had its first big gaming hit with New World, the game was unable to retain the majority of its user base a month after its release. When New World was published on September 28, it had an average of nearly one million concurrent gamers on Steam.
The game was soon hailed as Amazon’s first major release, and it was viewed as a legitimate challenger to MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. The game had a good initial few weeks, but Forbes calculated that it lost an average of 135,000 concurrent users every week following launch. Since the release of New World, the number of players online has declined week after week, from 913K to 726K, 608K, and – on October 23 – 508K, a little less than half of the player figures seen at the beginning of the month.
Furthermore, according to a recent report, only 8% of New World’s players have reached the game’s level max. While these data do not indicate that New World is in any type of significant trouble (it is really doing quite well, but more on that later), it is evident that the game is losing people at this stage, and has lost quite a few active players so far.
Issues with New World
It is fair to assume that such a huge drop in player count just after a month is unheard of. Especially in a role-playing game where the game is just beginning. But according to the community, there are some major reasons why so many players are quitting the game. If Amazon wants to have at least one success story, they need to focus on these issues and make drastic changes. The latest issue regarding the long queue times and players AFKing was addressed in a speedy way. Let’s hope that they continue to do the same.
These are some of the issues in-game that are the leading cause of the drop in player count.
- Weak endgame content in New World
- Inherent issues with large scale PvP battles
- The incredibly slow leveling process
- New World’s Deliberate Gameplay Loop Could Easily Chase People Away
- Messy in-game econom
Amazon needs to take charge address these issues if they want a successful game. The most important part of any MMORPG is the world and the endgame content. Since you can finish the main story in a jiffy, players need more endgame content to keep coming back to the game. They could address this issue by making the PvP system better. But all we can do is speculate.
