Amazon releases New World, its biggest MMO title

Published by

Amazon has officially released its MMO game titled New World. Here is everything you need to know about the multiplayer game.

If you have observed the gaming network in the past few months, you will have noticed the buzz around Amazons’s massively multiplayer online role playing game, New World. This will be the first successful game launch that Amazon will have(RIP Crucible). When New World was released for the closed beta, players reported some severe issues with their high end graphic cards. Even the development process was filled with mismanagement, unqualified leadership, top-to-bottom overhauls, and general dysfunction which eventually lead to multiple delays.

For any MMO game, the real test comes after 1 year of the game’s release. But Amazon’s New World is off to a good start at least according to Steam data. The peak concurrent player count on Steam is reported to be over 700,000. The number of Twitch viewers tuning in to check out their favourite streamers play the game is also very high. This is partly due to Amazon’s aggressive marketing and the fact that Twitch is a subsidiary of Amazon.

New World Gameplay

New World is a classic massively multiplayer online role playing game exclusive to PC. The game has a huge open world with various different environments and various different game modes like Player vs Player and Player vs Environment. There are some deep customization options for your character and playstyle.

Axes and Swords in New World

The setting for New World is Aeternum, a fictitious island in the Atlantic Ocean. You play as an explorer looking to colonise the island, but you discover that Aeternum is home to a magical substance known as Azoth. Azoth not only turns the local fauna and flora against you, but it also reanimates the dead explorers who came to Aeternum before you. In essence, the island is attempting to kill you. You’ll use Azoth’s power to fight back.

New World Factions

When you begin the game, you can choose from three factions – The Marauders, The Syndicate and The Covenant. Each faction has further divisions similar to a guild or clan from other MMO games. You can join these companies to work together and take over settlements scattered throughout Aeternum. After you successfully take over the settlement, it can be turned into your city which you will have to protect. Along with the three player factions, there are also four computer controlled factions – The Corrupted, The Lost, The Ancient and The Angry Earth.

New World Multiplayer

The factions are the main focus of the New World Multiplayer. Players can join four types of multiplayer modes with different objectives. They are Expeditions, Invasions, Outpost Rush and War Mode.

  • Expedition – This is the classic MMO dungeon battle. You can team up with four other players to solve puzzles and fight monsters and bosses in the Expedition mode.
  • Invasion – Invasion is New World’s Player vs Environment mode. You will have to team with 49 other players to defend your faction’s fort against computer controlled enemies. The waves of enemies continue for 30 minutes and the objective is to survive for full duration.
  • Outpost Rush – Outpost Rush is a mix of Player vs Player and Player vs Environment. Basically, it is a 20v20 battle between two teams where they have to fight each other and computer controlled enemies. The underlying objective is to capture and defend outposts for the duration of the battle.
  • War Mode – This is a purely Player vs Player mode where you will be fighting another faction in a 100 person battle. The objective is to either defend your faction fort or attack the enemy fort.
New World open world

New World is a huge step for Amazon as it is the only AAA game that has a chance of being successful. Initially, Amazon had announced plans to make three AAA games – Breakaway, Crucible and New World. Breakaway was canceled in 2018 and Crucible received a poor response which led to Amazon shutting the servers just after 7 months after launch. It will be interesting to see how New World fares in the current climate.
