He was born on December 12, 1981. He played college football for LSU, where he twice earned first-team All-SEC recognition. In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the second round.
Whitworth played with the Bengals for 11 seasons and was selected to three Pro Bowls and one first-team All-Pro. Whitworth played for the Los Angeles Rams for his final five seasons, increasing his total of four Pro Bowl choices and two first-team All-Pro nods. In Super Bowl LVI, his final NFL game, he was also a part of the squad that took home the championship.
In addition to retiring as the oldest tackle in NFL history, he was also the oldest offensive lineman to win a Super Bowl. In one of the hardest districts in the state, he also played on four consecutive district championship teams.
On December 30, 2000, he took part in the inaugural U.S. Army All-American Bowl match alongside future LSU players Ben Wilkerson, Marquise Hill, and Marcus Spears.
From 2001–2005, Whitworth attended LSU. Whitworth sat out all of 2001. He made every start as a redshirt freshman in 2002 and was named a Freshman All-American. 2003 sophomore started all 14 games. The 13-1 team won the BCS national championship with a Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma. He had 1,008 snaps and 105 blocks, including 82 knockdowns.
Whitworth took 799 scrimmage snaps in 2004, guiding the Tigers to a 9-3 record and the Citrus Bowl against Iowa. His play helped a team average 395.6 yards per game and score 39 touchdowns. He played every offensive action against Georgia, Florida, Troy, and Vanderbilt and had 96 blocks, including 66 knockdowns. LSU went 11-2 with him at left tackle in 2005.
In the Peach Bowl against Miami, they won 40-3. In nine of 13 games, he played every offensive play for a 374.1-yard-per-game offense. In his final season, he went 22 games without a sack. 104 blocks and knockdowns. Whitworth played in the 2006 East-West Shrine Game in San Antonio.
In the second round (55th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft, Whitworth was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals. On September 10, against Kansas City, he played his first special teams snap in the NFL. The following week, against the Cleveland Browns, he started at left guard as part of a line switch that saw left guard Eric Steinbach take the injured Levi Jones’ spot at left tackle.
Whitworth agreed to a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams on March 9, 2017. Whitworth went to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time in his first year with the Rams. His contemporaries ranked him 87th on the 2018 NFL Top 100 Players list.
With Whitworth’s assistance, the Rams beat the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game and the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round to get to Super Bowl in 2018 with Whitworth’s assistance. In the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots defeated the Rams.
Whitworth defeated his previous squad by winning the Rams’ 24-10 victory over the Bengals in the eighth week of the 2019 campaign. Whitworth’s triumph over all 32 NFL clubs made him just the 12th starter in league history to accomplish this feat. Whitworth agreed to a three-year deal with the Rams on April 1, 2020.

Whitworth was taken off the field on November 16 and put on injured reserve after tearing his MCL and damaging his PCL during a 23-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at home in Week 10. The next day, he was placed on injured reserve.
