Earlier on Thursday, the Indianapolis Colts agreed terms to sign free-agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore on a two-year deal worth $23 million.
Free-agent Stephon Gilmore visited the Indy training facility on Wednesday. The following day, he agreed terms to join the Colts on a multi-year deal, confirming his return to the NFL.
ESPN’s Ian Rappaport was the first to reveal that Gilmore was signing with the Colts. The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year will receive upwards of $23 million with $14 million guaranteed for staying in a Colts uniform until 2023.
Gilmore is a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the best cornerbacks in the world when healthy. After five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Gilmore made a big-money move to New England in 2017, where he was the centerpiece of Bill Belichick’s secondary. He did manage to win the Super Bowl with the team in 2019.
However, a quad injury and contract disputes led to his exit from the Patriots in 2021. He was traded to Carolina in early October, where he played in eight games for the NFC South Division side. Gilmore returned from injury last season to grab two interceptions in three starts (allowing just 155 yards in coverage),
NFL fans were eager to see Gilmore return to the NFL after he was released by the Panthers. They are now keen to watch him play alongside linebacker Darius Leonard and Pro Bowler Kenny Moore. Here’s a look at how some fans reacted to Gilmore making a return to the league:
