Southampton Opinion: Why the Saints should make a move for Jordan Ayew

According to a report from the Sun, Southampton are lining up a summer swoop for Jordan Ayew — after a year with Crystal Palace.

The Ghana international, 27, spent the last on loan at Crystal Palace from Swansea City. He failed to replicate the form that saw him move to the Eagles last summer following the relegation of Swansea City, playing 20 games and scoring only once for the south Londoners.

However, Southampton are keen on adding attacking players to their squad over the summer and want to sign Jordan Ayew, who Swansea want to offload from their wage bill but want to recoup most of the £5million they spent on the 27-year-old, the report adds.

Without much thinking, Southampton should shell out £5 million to sign Jordan Ayew this summer.

The Saints are gearing up for their first summer transfer window under Ralph Hasenhuttl. Hasenhuttl is expected to make some signings in this transfer window after guiding the club to safety in the Premier League. Looking at how he helped Southampton maintain its top-flight status, the Austrian appears to be the right man to take the club back on track.

But Hasenhuttl will need full backing from the board in the transfer market if the Sea Coast club are aiming for a top half finish in the 2019/20 campaign. There are some areas that need strengthening but the most important has to be the forward department, with Southampton lacking firepower at the moment.

Nathan Redmond and Shane Long did really well under Hasenhuttl but more consistency will be required from the duo next term. Danny Ings and Charlie Austin had mixed campaigns, while Mohamed Elyounoussi turned out to be a big-money flop. Hence, the addition of a new forward is crucial for the Saints.

Hasenhuttl has built his style of football on quick, expansive and attacking football and Ayew suits his philosophy. The Ghanaian forward isn’t a prolific goalscorer that’ll guarantee 15-20 goals every season. But he will offer plenty of energy, pace and versatility to Southampton, whilst being a resourceful back-up striker.

The former Aston Villa man is a flexible forward who is always on the move and likes to press the opposition defence to disturb their shape. If Ayew could form a strong partnership with Long or Redmond, Southampton could transform into a potent attacking force. Plus, the 27-year-old’s experience in the Premier League makes him an apt choice for the Saints.

Verdict

It may not be an expensive signing and Hasenhuttl’s club will get a versatile forward in Ayew. And at £5 million, it would represent a smart piece of business for the Saints.
