Celtic FC Opinion: Why Celtic should make a swoop for Mathias Jorgensen?
According to a report from the Scottish Sun, Scottish champions Celtic are interested in Huddersfield Town defender Mathias Jorgensen.
The Denmark international, 29, signed for The Terriers in summer 2017, and has made 62 appearances for the club and was key in their survival in his first season at the club. However, he couldn’t help Huddersfield stay up in the top-flight and now appears determined to leave John Smith stadium this summer.
Mathias Jorgensen is entering the final year of his contract at the club, so Huddersfield would be more than willing to cash in on the defender rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.
With the rangy defender expected to be available on a cut-price deal, Celtic must do everything possible to sign him up this summer.
Celtic could be in for a massive shake-up this summer despite winning the treble ‘Treble’ under Neil Lennon, whose side and Rangers are well placed to challenge for the title after a positive end to their campaign. Lennon, who was the given the permanent job after the Hoops’ success this past season, is now tasked with delivering a ninth straight Premiership title.
Lennon will need to improve his squad in order to continue the dominant run in domestic competitions and he must persuade the board to show some ambition in the transfer market. One of the most important areas the Celtic boss must address this summer is the defence, which looked shaky throughout the 2018/19 campaign.
Dedryck Boyata has already joined Hertha Berlin on a free transfer, and with loanee Filip Benkovic returning to Leicester City, Celtic have become thin in the defensive department. Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic enjoyed a strong end to the season, but with Jack Hendry unlikely to feature much if he’s still at the club, adding an experienced defender will be a step in the right direction for Lennon and company.

That’s why signing Jorgensen would make a lot of sense. Nicknamed ‘Zanka’, he’ll provide some real quality, experience and pedigree to the Celtic back-line, whilst being a perfect replacement for the departed Boyata.
The big Dane will also add some much-needed depth to the squad which the Hoops will need to win their ninth consecutive Premiership title.
Verdict
Hence, Celtic are right in entering the market to sign a new centre-back. They should take full advantage of Huddersfield’s relegation and make a bid for Jorgensen, as the 29-year-old would certainly improve the Glasgow giants’ back-line next season onwards.
