Anthony Joshua is a British professional boxer, who is a two time unified heavyweight champion. The 30-year-old goes by the nickname AJ.
Joshua is the current unified heavyweight champion, having held the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO titles since December 2019.
Born in Watford, Hertfordshire, AJ spent some of his early years in Nigeria, before returning to the UK. During his schooling days, Joshua excelled at football and athletics, but took up boxing in 2007, at the age of 18, after being suggested to do so by his cousin.
He has a massive social media following with around 17 million followers across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Anthony Joshua has a reported net worth of £107million ($133million) in 2021, according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2020. That is a rise of £58million ($72million) from his net worth in 2019. Almost the entire share of his earnings came through his fights against Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019.
The 30-year-old earned £18million ($22.6million) from his first coming-together with Ruiz Jr. at Madison Square Garden, despite losing that bout. The re-match in December last year, in which AJ reclaimed his championships, saw him reportedly pocket £60million ($75.3million).
According to Forbes, he pocketed around $11million from sponsorship/endorsement deals.
Anthony Joshua has a record of 23 wins and one loss so far in his professional boxing career. 21 of his 23 victories have come by knockouts, while two have come from unanimous decisions.
The 30-year-old’s first professional boxing match happened against Emanuele Leo in October 2013, at the O2 Arena in London, which he won by knockout. He won his first title – the vacant WBC International heavyweight title in 2014, beating Dennis Bakhtov.
Joshua bagged the IBF title in 2016, beating Charles Martin, before claiming the WBA (Super) and IBO heayweight titles in 2017 defeating Wladimir Klitschko at the Wembley Stadium. A year later, the 30-year-old would add the WBO title as well, having managed to defeat Joseph Parker.
His bout against Klitschko is widely acclaimed as his best fight, while the matches against Charles Martin, Carlos Takam and Alexander Povetkin are also held in high regard.
Joshua lost his unified heavyweight championship in June last year to Andy Ruiz Jr. – his first-ever defeat in professional boxing, in Madison Square Garden, New York. The two battled again in December, in Saudi Arabia, when AJ managed to reclaim his heavyweight title.
Joshua then defeated Kubrat Pulev in London to keep hold of his gold.
Anthony Joshua was born in Watford, Hertfordshire to Yeta (mother) and Robert Joshua (father). His mother is Nigerian, while his father is of Nigerian-Irish descent. Having spent some of his schooling years in Nigeria, Joshua moved back to England after his parents’ divorce when he was aged 12.
His cousin, Ben Ilyemi, is also a professional boxer and the pair made their debut together in 2013.
Joshua used to date a dance teacher, Nicole Osbourne, with whom he has a son Joseph “JJ” Joshua, born in 2015. The 30-year-old recently admitted that he isn’t seeing anyone currently.
Anthony Joshua was scheduled to face Kubrat Pulev in June this year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. However, the fight was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Promoter Eddie Hearn claimed that the match between the two could take place sometime between September and December. He also revealed that Joshua could take on current WBC champion Tyson Fury twice in 2021.
Joshua defeated his rival and it is to be seen who he fights next.
