Anyone need a plate: The meme took over Reddit tennis after Daniil Medvedev’s loss against Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open final
It was all going well for Daniil Medvedev until the end of set 2 of the 2024 Australian Open Final.
However, a slow drop in energy, due to accumulated fatigue, having played a five-setter a couple of days before, against Alexander Zverev, began showing in the third set. Jannik Sinner began finding his footing, as he came roaring back to win the third set, 6-4.
He repeated the same in the fourth set, and from there it looked evident that the Italian would have the taste of his first Grand Slam success.
A break when the score was 3-2 in the final set, put Sinner in pole position to clinch gold. He ultimately ended up winning the final set, 6-3, to cap off a comeback for the ages.
Not many have been 2 sets down in a major final, and gone on to win it
Everyone knows Andy Murray’s struggles at the Australian Open. Despite being a brilliant hardcourt player, the Brit never really won a slam in Melbourne, despite making it to the finals numerous times. His biggest nemesis? Novak Djokovic.
Murray has made it to 5 Australian Open finals in his career, and has been beaten by Novak Djokovic four times, the other one being Roger Federer.
Daniil Medvedev’s loss reeks of a lot of similarities. He has now lost in three Australian Open finals, 2021, 2022 and 2024.
This has seen Tennis Reddit fans come up with the ‘Anyone need a plate’ meme – shield given to the runner-up at the Australian Open.
Here are some of the reactions to the same:
For Medvedev, it is back to the drawing board, and reflect on his energy management.
Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, will believe that these are signs of things to come.
