The 35-year-old opened the season by playing in the 2023 ASB Classic in January. He won the first set of his first-round clash against Jenson Brooksby but lost the following two sets to crash out of the tournament. Fognini was quite upset with the fact that Brooksby didn’t apologize after winning a crucial point on a net cord and even gave the American youngster a telling-off after the match.

Fognini went on to play in the Australian Open. Thanasi Kokkinakis comprehensively defeated the veteran in straight sets in the first round. Fognini teamed up with Simone Bolelli but they lost to the team of Fabien Reboul and Sadio Doumbia in straight sets in the first round.

In the ASB Classic, Djere notched up two memorable wins against Jaume Munar and top seed Casper Ruud after dropping the first sets on both occasions. The 27-year-old was bettered by Constant Lestienne in the quarterfinals.
