2nd seed Cameron Norrie takes on an upbeat Juan Pablo Varillas in the semifinals of the 2023 Argentina Open on Saturday.
Cameron Norrie
The British No. 1 has managed to reach his second semifinal this season. He finished runner-up in the ASB Classic and fought hard to reach the semis in Argentina.
Norrie came back from a set down to defeat Facundo Diaz Acosta in the round of 16 after receiving a first-round bye. The three-set thriller ended 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in favor of Norrie. He faced another Argentine player, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, in the quarterfinals. Once again, Norrie lost the first set but bounced back to outplay his opponent and win the match 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.
Juan Pablo Varillas
It has been a dream run for the 27-year-old in the tournament thus far. He managed to ease past Thiago Agustin Tirante and Federico Delbonis in the two qualifying encounters. In the round of 32, Pablo Varillas defeated Joa Sousa in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. In the round of 16, Varillas got the better of Austrian veteran Dominic Thiem in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Pablo Varillas took on the third seed Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. The Peruvian athlete managed to win the match 6-4, 6-4. He served well and had a win percentage of 76 on the first serve. He will be fancying his chances against Norrie who has not looked entirely at his best in the tournament.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have never faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Cameron Norrie to win in straight sets.
