The 2020 US Open champion came into the Argentina Open after suffering a first-round exit in the Australian Open last month. He faced 5th seed Andrey Rublev in what turned out to be a lopsided encounter. The Russian star outplayed Thiem to win the match in straight sets.

Juan Pablo Varillas
The 27-year-old played in the Cordoba Open before beginning his Argentina Open campaign. In the first round in Cordoba, Pablo Varillas lost to Dusan Lajovic.
Pablo Varillas had to win a couple of rounds of qualifying to make it to the main draw of the Argentina Open. In the first round of qualifying, he defeated Thiago Agustin Tirante, while in the second round, she beat another Argentine Federico Delbonis. Portuguese veteran Joao Sousa took on Pablo Varillas in the round of 32. The latter emerged victorious in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 42 minutes. Pablo Varillas had a win percentage of 79 on the first serve.
