Why Arsenal must plot a summer swoop for Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic

According to the Daily Star (h/t The Sun), Arsenal are interested in signing Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic this summer as manager Mikel Arteta plans to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal is up in the air. The striker’s contract at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2021 and depending on what happens to player contracts and the transfer window following the coronavirus pandemic, he could be on his way out. The Gabon international, 30, is one of the most important players for Arteta’s Gunners simply because of his goals. He has got a fantastic scoring ratio and is one of the best finishers in the Premier League, having netted 61 goals in 97 appearances for the north London giants. He has scored 20 goals in 32 games this term and is considered in the top echelon of strikers in world football.

He has been superb for an Arsenal team who have struggled to finish in the top four of the Premier League table. However, Aubameyang has just a year remaining on his current contract at Arsenal and has turned 30.

It remains to be seen what happens with the Gabonese at the end of the season, but the Gunners must do everything in their powers to sign Luka Jovic from Real Madrid.

Jovic, 22, came through the ranks of Red Star Belgrade’s youth system and moved to Benfica in 2016. Due to limited opportunities, he was sent on loan to Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he made the most of his two-season spell.

After netting nine goals in his debut campaign in Germany, the Serbian impressed by scoring 27 goals across all competitions last term, helping Eintracht Frankfurt reach the Europa League semi-finals.

Jovic’s exploits earned him a big-money move to Spain with Real Madrid last summer but the Serbian has failed to live up to the big expectations of the Bernabeu faithful, scoring just 2 goals throughout the campaign.

Truth to be told, the 22-year-old has been deprived of regular opportunities under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid. But, Jovic showed last season with Frankfurt that he has goals in him.

Jovic is a young centre-forward and has the potential to become a world-class forward if he can reproduce the same form he showed last season with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Verdict

Jovic would be a long-term asset for the Gunners if he shows his quality and hits the ground running in the Premier League. Plus, the former Benfica man would provide Arteta with the required depth and quality in the forward department.

Thus, should Real Madrid decide to offload the Serbian, Arsenal must secure his services without any second thoughts.
