Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners go for Aleksandr Golovin?

Aaron Ramsey has already said goodbye to the Emirates Stadium, ending an 11-year association with Arsenal.

The Welshman, 28, will officially become a Juventus player on July 1 after signing a pre-contract agreement with the Italian champions in February. He was given an emotional sending off by the Gunners during the club’s last game at home in the Premier League against Cardiff.

Aaron Ramsey, who joined from Cardiff in 2008, was a fan-favourite at the Emirates Stadium. He won three FA Cups during his time in north London, scoring the winning goal in both the 2014 final against Hull and 2017 final against Chelsea.

His departure will leave a huge void in the Arsenal squad, which Unai Emery must look to address in the summer transfer window.

Back in 2018, the Metro claimed Arsenal were interested in signing Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin after a sensational World Cup campaign. However, a move didn’t materialise and the 22-year-old instead joined AS Monaco from CSKA Moscow last summer.

Aleksandr Golovin has endured a tough debut season at AS Monaco, with the club fighting tooth and nail at the moment to avoid relegation in the Ligue 1.

The Russian has failed to live up to the expectations at the club and the fans and could leave Monaco if they get relegated at the end of the season. Even if Monaco manages to keep their Ligue 1 status intact, Arsenal must reignite their interest and sign Golovin in the summer transfer window.

Strengthening the defence has to be Unai Emery’s priority following a dismal show from the defenders. But, he needs to also bolster his options in midfield.

Someone with the passing ability and creativity to unlock defences is required in Arsenal’s midfield, which would make Golovin an ideal fit.

A technically-gifted midfielder, Golovin is extremely versatile as he can play in central midfield, as a deep-lying playmaker, on either flank, or as a No.10.

He is an excellent operator of the ball, with his distribution skills often catching the eye. The Russian has the ability to cover a lot of ground and tends to break up the play with good standing tackles and interceptions.

The 22-year-old is also a good reader of the game and also excels in keeping possession, allowing his teammates to make penetrating runs. In short, he has all the qualities to flourish under Emery at Arsenal.

Verdict

Despite Golovin having struggled to make an impact in the Ligue 1, his quality is undeniable and Arsenal should look to bring him to North London. He could turn out to be the Gunners’ new Aaron Ramsey.
