Arsenal Opinion: Why Jordan Veretout will be a good fit for the Gunners?

According to a report from French newspaper L’Equipe, Arsenal have made enquired about the availability of Fiorentina midfielder Jordan Veretout.

The Frenchman, 26, has been one of the standout performers for Fiorentina since his move from Aston Villa in 2017. He made 33 appearances in the Serie A this season, scoring five goals and supplying three assists.

The report claims Jordan Veretout, who has also attracted interest from AS Roma and Sevilla, has been in talks with Napoli for some time now, but Arsenal have made a late move of their own for the midfield ace. As he has a contract with Fiorentina until 2021, the Gunners have to spend big to sign him this summer.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery is keen to make significant changes to his squad this summer, though the team’s failure to qualify for the Champions League next season means he’ll have to operate on a limited transfer budget. The North London giants will need to sell some of the deadwood before moving onto addressing different areas of the pitch.

And a midfielder has to be at the top Emery’s wishlist following Aaron Ramsey’s departure to Juventus on a free transfer. The Wales international’s exit has left a huge void in the Arsenal squad and Emery must make sure he brings in a player to replace him this summer itself.

Jordan Veretout is exactly the type of player Emery needs at the Emirates. An accomplished passer of the ball, he has added 16 goals and eight assists in his three years since leaving Aston Villa.

The Frenchman is a central midfielder by trade but blossomed into a deeper role under Stefano Pioli this past season, showing great ability to initiate counter-attacks from the base of the midfield.

The former France youth international is a strong tackler, doesn’t gets dispossessed of the ball so easily and is an energetic presence to have in the midfield.

He never hesitates to fly into challenges and in that process is susceptible to accumulating yellow cards or even getting sent off. But the 26-year-old is exactly the kind of dynamic player that will fit right in with the likes of Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi at Arsenal.

Plus, Veretout chips in with crucial goals and is equally capable of creating opportunities for his teammates with his incisive passing in the final third. The ex-Nantes man couldn’t do much in his brief spell at Aston Villa, but could welcome a return to the Premier League to prove his detractors wrong.

Verdict

Arsenal’s lack of Champions League football could work against them but Emery must do everything possible to get Veretout signed. The 26-year-old midfielder would be a fantastic addition to the Gunners squad.
