Arsenal should offload Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Elneny in January
Arsenal strung together an impressive unbeaten run of 22 games across all competitions under their new manager Unai Emery but that streak finally came to an end with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Southampton away from home.
The Gunners currently sit 5th in the standings with 34 points from 17 games, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool and 3 behind 4th-placed Chelsea. The top five teams have been really consistent this season and Arsenal haven’t really been able to breathe on the necks of Manchester City and Liverpool despite stringing together an impressive winning run.
As things stand, Arsenal will need to fight it out for the Champions League spot and the Gunners need a few new recruits in January, especially, at the back to plug the holes. They need to offload some of their fringe players and here are 2 players that they should offload in January to fund the move for a world-class defender.
1. Mesut Ozil
The German wizard, who joined from Real Madrid for a fee of £42.4 million back in 2013, was one of the mainstays of Arsenal’s attack in the Arsene Wenger era. However, the arrival of Unai Emery has put a question mark over his future at the club.
The 29-year-old has amassed 3 goals and an assist from 10 starts in the Premier League this season but in all honesty, he has found it difficult to cope with Emery’s high-intensity pressing football.
In fact, Ozil has proven himself to be a glaring misfit for Emery’s philosophy this season. Not only has he failed to have a consistent impact on the proceedings but has also put extra pressure on his teammates with some sloppy passing and poor work-rate.
Suffice to say, a player like Ozil is unlikely to live to up his billings under Unai Emery at the Emirates and a move away from the club should be ideal for all parties involved. He is currently one of the highest paid players in the Premier League and recently signed a new contract with the club.
Even at 29, Ozil would command a decent fee and Arsenal should not hesitate to cash in on him in January to fund the move for another world-class alternative.
2. Mohamed Elneny
The Egyptian midfielder hasn’t played a part for the Gunners in the Premier League but has featured regularly in the group stages of the Europa League.
The 26-year-old has failed to cement his place in the first-team since he made a from FC Basel and the arrival of Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira this summer has pushed him further down the pecking order at the club.

Leicester City are one of the clubs who are prepared to give him an escape route for a fee of £15 million and Arsenal should cash in on him in January.
