Second seed Cameron Norrie locks horns with Marcos Giron in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ASB Classic on Thursday.
The British No. 1 has started the season on a fine note. He is yet to lose a match so far in the season and has already registered wins against Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz.
After receiving a first-round bye, Norrie faced Jiri Lehecka in the round of 16. The match turned out to be closer than maybe what Norrie would have expected. After losing the first set, Lehecka bounced back to take the second set. Norrie’s class proved to be too much for Lehecka as the experienced campaigner dominated the third set and won the match 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.
The 29-year-old comes into the tournament on the back of an exit in the second round at the Adelaide International 1. Giron defeated Richard Gasquet in the first round before going down to Alexei Popyrin in the second.
So far in Auckland, Giron has notched up wins against Federico Coria and Jeffrey John Wolf. Against Coria, Giron managed to come back from a set down to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-5. The second-round clash against compatriot Wolf was won relatively easily by Giron in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1. Marcos Giron won their most recent encounter in the round of 16 of the 2022 Vienna Open in straight sets.
Prediction: Cameron Norrie to win in straight sets.
