French veteran Richard Gasquet locks horns with Belgium’s David Goffin in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ASB Classic on Thursday.
The world No. 67 had a subpar campaign in the Adelaide International 1. In the first round, he lost to America’s Marcos Giron in a closely-contested encounter. The thrilling encounter ended 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 in favor of Giron.
In Auckland, Gasquet is yet to drop a set in the two matches that he has played. In the round of 32, he defeated home player Kiranpal Pannu in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Gasquet followed it up with another win against Portuguese veteran Joao Sousa. The first set was tight but Gasquet blew away his opponent in the second set to eventually win 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
The 32 year-old did not have a great start to the season. He played in the inaugural United Cup but lost both the singles matches.
He has managed to turn his fortunes her in Auckland with a couple of fine wins. In the round of 32, Goffin got the better of fifth seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes. Goffin followed it up with another impressive performance in the round of 16 against America’s Christopher Eubanks. The match ended in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 3-2 in favor of David Goffin. Gasquet won their last encounter in the 2022 European Open in straight sets. That was in the quarterfinals as well.
